Conformance Inspection

DTB’s Conformance Inspection facility provides the capability to nondestructively, and destructively inspect randomly selected parts from a production lot of a fully qualified and tested vendor, to confirm continued conformance to technical data.

Dimensional Inspection

Our temperature controlled 1000 sq. ft. dimensional lab consists of 3 Coordinate Measuring Machines (Leitz, Mitutoyo and Starett), a Computer controlled Optical Comparator, and a surface roughness measuring station. Our conventional open setup measuring equipment feature 3 large surface plates, height gages, calipers, micrometers, over 250 thread gages and over 1000 plug gages. We have an experienced staff of 8 full time technicians and 1 engineer. Dimensional Inspection assures product compliance with design specifications by assessing the geometric characteristics that can affect both the reliability and functionality of the part, within the desired level of accuracy and in accordance with the guidelines of ASME Y14.5.

Material Verification

At Dayton T. Brown, Inc. we have the tools in our Metallurgy and Materials Laboratory to confirm your ferrous or non-ferrous materials. Our Arc emission spectrometer is equipped with a comprehensive standards library for highly accurate quantitative compositional analysis of all types of steels, cast irons, aluminum alloys, nickel and cobalt base super alloys, titanium base alloys, and copper base alloys. The metallurgical laboratory has a fully equipped SEM/EDS system with calibrated digital image acquisition and feature measurements. Typical applications include rapid qualitative determination of alloy and coating compositions, and detailed microfractographic, microstructural, and corrosion analyses. Physical and chemical properties are required to insure conformance to customer’s designs and specifications.

Process Verification

Correct manufacturing processes are critical in the function and safe performance of your test item. The Dayton T. Brown Conformance Inspection team can verify your processes in our lab with non-destructive and destructive methods. The following is a list of some processes we routinely examine: Hardness, Shot Peening, Temper Etching, Macro and Micro hardness, grain flow, plating/coating types and thicknesses, thread forming and surface texture.

Automated High Volume CMM Inspection

We have 2 programmable 3 axis Coordinate Measuring Machines (Leitz and Mitutoyo) to meet your high volume or production inspection requirements. Each is capable of confirming all Geometric Dimensional Tolerances per ASME Y14.5.

Non-Contact Dimensional Inspection

We have a programmable (Optical Gauging Products) optical Comparator with auto-edge detection and capabilities of 10X, 20X and 50X magnifications. Capabilities include: 2D measurement analysis and GD and T evaluations. The comparator can be run manually or under direct computer control using either surface or profile illumination.

NDI Non-Destructive Inspections

Liquid Penetrant

DTB has the capability of performing liquid penetrant inspections to procedures based on ASTM E-1417. DTB has 2 certified level III and 2 certified level II technicians per ASNT SNT-TC1A.

Magnetic Particle

DTB has the capacity to inspect parts comprised of magnetic materials up to 9.5 feet in length. Additionally, DTB has portable magnetic particle inspection equipment. The magnetic particle inspections are performed IAW procedures based upon ASTM E-1444. DTB has 2 certified level III and 2 certified level II technicians per ASNT SNT-TC1A.

Surface Roughness Analysis

Our Surface measuring station (Mahr-Federal) utilizes a motorized non-skidded stylus measuring probe to determine surface roughness parameters per ASME Y46.1.

First Article Inspection

DTB routinely performs First Article Testing (FAT) for testing for military and commercial suppliers. A complete FAT begins with a review of the technical data package supplied and a visual examination of the part. Dimensional Inspection starts with numbering of the drawing dimensions to create an itemized list of the features. A data sheet is created of all nominal dimensions. Prior to dimensional setup a complete review of the drawing datum structure is performed to create an inspection plan. The appropriate dimensional equipment is selected depending on part tolerances, accessibility and measurement efficiency. Upon completion of the inspection the actual values are recorded on the data sheet and reviewed by engineering. The part can undergo a Non-Destructive Inspection, hardness and or a destructive metallurgical analysis.

Part Profiling

At Dayton T. Brown, Inc. we can scan your products critical profiles using the latest measurement technology. We can confirm compliance with your tolerances and display the results with color coded printouts including: nominal part shape, tolerance bands, actual shape and deviations. We can accommodate your CAD files to define nominal part shape or develop one from your supplied drawings.

Dimensional Lab Equipment and Capabilities

Leitz CMM

Leitz model 12 10 6 Coordinate Measuring Machine

The Leitz model 12 10 6 Coordinate Measuring Machine is of laboratory grade with accuracies to ±1 micrometer (0.000039 inch).

It has a measurement volume of 47 x 39 x 24 inches and a maximum weight capacity of 3,000 pounds. The Leitz CMM is installed in DTB’s temperature controlled dimensional lab on an 8 x 6 x 4 foot concrete slab designed to minimize externally induced vibrations.

The Leitz CMM is programmable, allowing automatic measurements of multiple part samples. An analog probe allows continuous scanning in all three axes simultaneously. Its Quindos software provides geometric tolerancing calculations along with gear and spline measurement capability.

Mitutoyo CMM

Mitutoyo CMM

Model Crysta-Apex C 7106, is a direct computer controlled high speed programmable CMM with a measuring range of 27 in x 39 in x 23 in and an accuracy ± .0002”.

Capabilities include 2D and 3D measurement analysis, GD and T evaluations, form, contour and inspection to CAD models.

The CMM is fitted with a Motorized Renishaw touch trigger probe.

Starrett CMMs

DTB owns two Starrett CMMs. The software allows 2D calculations for per GD and T requirements.

Profilometer

Profilometer

The dimensional lab contains a (Mahr-Federal) digitally filtered, non-skidded probe surface roughness measuring station.

It is capable of surface roughness analysis per ASME B46.1.

Optical Comparator

Optical Comparator

DTB owns an Optical Comparator from Optical Gaging Products, which has both surface and contour illumination as well as auto edge-detection system.

It’s features and capabilities include: a 14 in screen, 10x, 20x, 50x magnifications, computer controlled, auto-edge detection system, Linear accuracy ± .0002, 2D measurement analysis and GD and T evaluations.
