Shielding Effectiveness Testing

DTB has over 40 years of SE experience from 1960’s era aircraft harnesses through latest in Ethernet CAT-7 cables and composite materials. There are dozens of Shielding Effectiveness (SE) specifications in the military and commercial worlds with, most designed to provide a tool for quality control for specific materials.

We have specialized in adapting these specifications to develop tests to evaluate SE in real world conditions. In conjunction with the U.S. Navy, DTB built one of the first large stirred mode chambers to test the SE of large armament systems.

Many of our customized test approaches have been incorporated into product development specs or test specs.

DTB has performed SE testing on hundreds of items including the following:
  • Rooms – shielded and unshielded

  • Cabinets – system racks, equipment enclosures

  • Panels – metal, composites, laminates, glass, fabric

  • Cables – power, RF, communications, Ethernet, etc.

  • Connectors

  • Gaskets

  • Special/Unique – aircraft fuselage, torpedo hull, aircraft engine cowling

New products or applications also undergo environmental and vibration evaluations in our lab. We have performed specialized tests such as combined temperature/vibration to assess pin chatter in connectors, cold temperature bend radius for cables, or long term corrosion tests on composite panels, just to name a few.

Sample Application: Rail Transportation EMI / EMC

During the past seven years, New York City Transit (NYCT) has placed into service more than 1,800 “New-Technology” subway cars with up to 1500 more on the way. And since 2000 through as recently as late 2006, Dayton T. Brown, Inc. has performed the EMC acceptance testing for each new train model.

So how do you test a ten-car train that is over 600 feet long, weighs over one million pounds, requires 6000 amps at 600 Vdc to operate, and is moving at 50 mph?

By assembling a team of engineers from several disciplines within our lab, Dayton T. Brown, Inc. has developed the instrumentation, methods, and expertise to perform EMC acceptance testing of the newest technology subway cars.

Sample Application MIL-STD 461

Here is a sample data sheet results of MIL-STD 461 test.
